Sun safety for solar installers

You install sun power. Do it without the sunburn. Solar PV installers work on roofs and open arrays in the brightest part of the day, at height, beside reflective panels and metal roofing.

Where the exposure comes from

  • Roof work at height in full sun
  • Reflection from panels and metal roofing
  • Little shade on roofs and arrays
  • Small teams moving between sites daily

Controls that work, in order

  • Plan roof work for early morning where possible
  • Harness-compatible long sleeves and brims
  • Pocket tubes in every bakkie and a refill at the depot
  • Reapply before going up and at each break
  • UV-filter safety glasses

Sunscreen supports shade and clothing; it does not replace them.

Questions from this sector

Can we reapply at height?

Reapply on the ground before going up and at each break. Pocket tubes are easier to carry and use safely than larger packs.

Is sun protection a legal duty?

Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 requires employers to provide a working environment that is safe and without risk to health, as far as reasonably practicable. Solar UV is a recognised occupational hazard, so it belongs in the risk assessment. This is general information, not legal advice.
