Sun safety for rail maintenance

Ballast, steel and long possessions in full sun. Track, signalling and overhead maintenance teams work long possessions on open corridors with light ballast and steel that reflect UV, far from shade.

Where the exposure comes from

  • Long possessions on open corridors
  • Reflection from ballast stone and steel
  • Night shifts followed by early-morning sun
  • Remote access points with no facilities

Controls that work, in order

  • Possession planning that moves heavy work out of 10:00 to 15:00 where possible
  • Hi-vis long sleeves and brims under hard hats
  • Pocket tubes in every kit bag and a station at the depot
  • Supervisor checks at the start of each possession
  • Eye protection with a UV filter

Sunscreen supports shade and clothing; it does not replace them.

Questions from this sector

How do we protect night-shift workers?

Night work has no UV, but crews that finish after sunrise or start before sunset still need protection. Schedule the reapply calls around those hours.

Is sun protection a legal duty?

Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 requires employers to provide a working environment that is safe and without risk to health, as far as reasonably practicable. Solar UV is a recognised occupational hazard, so it belongs in the risk assessment. This is general information, not legal advice.
